There’s something deeply magical about chasing the sun down a road that feels like it’s floating on water. That’s exactly what I experienced on my recent road trip from Miami to Key West with three of my closest friends. With coffee in hand and the sky still cloaked in pre-dawn blues, we set off on one of the most scenic drives in the U.S. — a day filled with tropical vibes, adrenaline, culture, and unforgettable views.
🚗 The Road Trip Begins: Before Sunrise on the Overseas Highway
We left Miami well before the sun rose, the city still asleep behind us. The Overseas Highway slowly unfolded, with its 42 bridges connecting the tiny islands of the Florida Keys like a necklace strung with turquoise gems. As the sky gradually transitioned from navy to orange, the ocean on both sides shimmered — it felt like we were driving through a dream.

A highlight of the drive was Seven Mile Bridge, where we stopped just after sunrise. With almost no traffic, we launched our drone and captured breathtaking shots of the bridge slicing through endless water. The stillness, the golden light, the sheer beauty — it was cinematic.
📍 Southernmost Point Buoy: Welcome to Key West
We reached Key West mid-morning and headed straight for the iconic Southernmost Point Buoy. There’s something thrilling about standing just 90 miles from Cuba, at one of the southernmost points in the continental U.S. It was crowded but electric — travelers from all over the world snapping selfies and soaking up the vibe.

Quick tip: Come early if you want a photo without the line!
🪂 Up in the Air: Parasailing Over the Bluest Waters
Next on our agenda: parasailing. We booked with Sunset Watersports, and they didn’t disappoint. I was a little nervous at first, but once we were airborne, everything changed. Suspended above the Key West coastline, with the breeze in my hair and panoramic views of the island below, I felt weightless and alive. It was the kind of experience that etches itself into your memory forever.

🎭 Fantasy Fest Vibes (Even Off-Season!)
After touching down (literally), we walked over to the Fantasy Fest zone. Although the festival wasn’t on during our visit, the streets were still full of quirky murals, vibrant shops, and that signature Key West eccentric charm.

Fantasy Fest happens in late October, and after seeing the setup, I’m tempted to come back for the real party!
🌴 Winding the Day at Smathers Beach
As the day mellowed, we headed to Smathers Beach to relax and reflect. This is the largest public beach in Key West, Florida. The golden hour glow cast a warm hue on the palm trees and soft waves. We walked barefoot along the shore, grabbed a few tropical smoothies from a nearby shack, and watched the sun slowly descend behind the horizon. It was the perfect ending to an action-packed day.
