Rocks State Park, MD

People say you shouldn’t reveal your resolutions, but I’ll share this one: I want to spend more time in nature and stay physically active this year. Yesterday, I did my first hike of 2026, and I wanted to start the year by simply getting outside and moving. Rocks State Park in Maryland felt like the right place for that. I wasn’t planning anything intense, just a short hike, some fresh air, and a change from holiday routine.

I drove over from West York, Pennsylvania, and in about 45 minutes, I reached the Rocks State Park Picnic Area parking lot. While there are several parking options throughout the park, this one worked best because it’s centrally located and offers easy access to multiple hiking trails.

Getting There: Drive from York County, PA

One of the reasons Rocks State Park works so well for a day trip is how easy it is to get to. I drove from West York, PA, and the drive took about 45 minutes. The roads were smooth, cutting through the countryside of southern Pennsylvania, and before I knew it, I was pulling into the picnic area parking lot.

Parking was easy and close to the trail access. If you’re coming from southern Pennsylvania or the Baltimore area, this park is an easy choice for a quick dose of nature.

First Stop: King and Queen Seat Rock

From the picnic area, I headed straight toward King and Queen Seat, the most iconic spot in Rocks State Park, and for good reason.

The walk to the rock isn’t long or difficult. Within minutes, the forest opens up and you’re standing beneath this massive, dramatic rock formation. The stone juts out above the trees, and once you climb up (carefully), the views are wide and rewarding.

From the top, you get a clear look at the surrounding countryside. It was cold up there, and it can get a little busy on weekends. I walked up to the edge, took a few selfies, and then stepped aside to let other hikers enjoy the view too.

Quick tip: The rock surface can be uneven. Wear shoes with decent grip and take your time near the edges.

Hiking the White Trail

After spending time at the King and Queen Seat, I continued my visit by hiking the White Trail. This trail adds a nice balance to the trip; it’s not overly challenging, but it’s engaging enough to feel like a proper hike.

The White Trail winds through wooded areas with small elevation changes. The path is well-marked, and I didn’t feel rushed at any point. It’s the kind of trail where you naturally fall into a rhythm – walking, thinking, stopping to look around. What I liked most was how calm it felt. Even though the park is popular, once you’re on the trail, it doesn’t feel crowded.
