Recently, I visited New Hampshire over the 04th of July long weekend and was looking to explore some places around, when Hammond Castle in Gloucester, MA came up as an option. For someone like me, who is fond of history and the historic monuments, this was a perfect option.
I decided to take a day trip from Durham, New Hampshire, to Gloucester, Massachusetts. The drive took about an hour, making it an easy getaway without needing to wake up too early. As we got closer to the coast, the views became more beautiful, and before long, we were standing in front of a real castle overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
It wasn’t just another historic building. It felt like stepping back into time, with stone walls, hidden corners, and incredible ocean views all around.
Driving to Hammond Castle
We left Durham in the morning and reached Hammond Castle in about an hour. Since we had already booked our tickets online, getting inside was quick and easy.
Parking is available at the castle, but the lot is fairly small. We were able to find a spot without any trouble, but I would recommend arriving a little early, especially on weekends when it can get busy.
Booking tickets in advance definitely made the visit smoother. You can book the tickets here.
Exploring Hammond Castle
The best way to experience the castle is by joining the guided tour, and that’s exactly what we did.

The guide shared fascinating stories about inventor John Hays Hammond Jr., who built the castle during the 1920s. Instead of simply walking through rooms, we learned why different parts of the castle were designed the way they were and how Hammond collected historic pieces from Europe to create something truly unique.
The Great Hall immediately caught my attention with its high ceilings, stone walls, and medieval atmosphere. Walking through the rooms, courtyards, and narrow staircases made every section feel different from the last.

One of my favorite parts was seeing how the castle blends history with ocean views. Looking out over the rocky shoreline from the castle grounds was just as memorable as exploring the inside.
Lunch in Downtown Gloucester
After leaving the castle, we drove into downtown Gloucester for lunch.
The downtown area has a relaxed coastal feel with local restaurants, seafood spots, and small shops. It was a nice change of pace after spending the morning surrounded by history.
If you’re visiting Gloucester, this is a great place to grab fresh seafood or simply enjoy a walk along the harbor before continuing your day.
Visiting Eastern Point Lighthouse
Our final stop was Eastern Point Lighthouse, and it turned out to be a perfect way to end the trip.

Parking near the lighthouse cost us $10, and from there we walked along the long granite breakwater that stretches out toward the water. Walking along the pier-like structure with the ocean on both sides was peaceful, and the views back toward the lighthouse were beautiful.
We spent some time taking photos, enjoying the scenery, and simply watching the water before heading back home in the evening.

This day trip turned out to be a great mix of history, architecture, and coastal scenery. Hammond Castle offers much more than beautiful stone walls. Adding downtown Gloucester and Eastern Point Lighthouse made the day feel complete, giving us a chance to enjoy both the town and the coastline before heading home.
