Last weekend, York County received its first snowfall of 2026, and while it felt like staying in with a warm drink, I did the opposite. I drove out to Kellys Run Nature Preserve, laced up my snow boots, and spent the day hiking through snow-covered trails, frozen streams, and quiet forest paths. It was an experience full of adrenaline rush with hiking on snow and driving on ice.

If you’re looking for an easy day trip from York, PA, especially if you enjoy hiking and scenic overlooks, this one’s worth putting on your list.
Getting There from York, PA
We drove from York, PA, and reached the main parking lot at Kellys Run Nature Preserve without any trouble. The drive itself is pleasant, with mostly back roads and farmland as you approach Lancaster County. There’s a small but clearly marked parking area near the trailhead.
Parking is free, and there is no entrance fee to the nature preserve. The washroom facility is right at the start of the trailhead and was pretty clean.
Hiking the Kellys Run Main Loop (3.8 Miles)
We decided to hike the main loop, which comes in at about 3.8 miles. With the trail covered in snow, we naturally slowed our pace, and honestly, that made the hike even more enjoyable. The path winds through dense woods, rocky stretches, and a few stream crossings, with gentle climbs and descents that keep things interesting without feeling overwhelming. The snow transformed the entire landscape, giving it a quiet, almost meditative feel.

You could hear the creek flowing beneath thin layers of ice, the steady crunch of snow underfoot, and very little else. It felt like we had the forest to ourselves. Some sections were a bit slippery, especially around rocks and inclines, but with proper footwear it was completely manageable. Overall, it’s a moderately challenging hike, particularly in winter, but very doable if you take your time and enjoy the experience.
Sunset at Pinnacle Overlook
After finishing the hike, we hopped back in the car and drove to Pinnacle Overlook to catch the sunset. This stop pairs perfectly with Kellys Run and is just a short drive away. Hardly 5 minutes from Kellys Run parking lot.

The overlook offers wide views of the Susquehanna River, rolling hills, and the surrounding countryside. Watching the sun dip below the horizon after a full hike felt like the perfect way to end the day, calm, scenic, and surreal.
