Do you know what the best things are about the Fall Season? Of course, Fall Foliage is one of those things, but the festivals, fairs, and pumpkin patch events make the Fall Season my favorite time of the year. This year, I got to attend the Reading Liederkranz Oktoberfest, one of the most authentic German festivals you’ll find in the state of Pennsylvania.
The Oktoberfest at Reading Liederkranz isn’t just another fall event. It’s a yearly tradition that’s been celebrated for decades, and it’s one of the most anticipated festivals in Pennsylvania. Every year, thousands of people show up for the same reason: incredible food, energetic music, and that warm sense of community that makes you feel like you’ve stepped straight into Bavaria.

Reaching the Festival
Me along with my friends drove from York County in the evening, after work. The route itself was beautiful and straightforward for most of the part from York County. It took us around an hour to reach the Free Shuttle Service Location, which was about 1.5 miles away from the main event ground.
We parked at one of the designated shuttle pickup spots near the Carsonia Park (a super convenient option if you don’t want to deal with festival parking). From there, we hopped on the shuttle bus to the fest grounds. The ride was short and filled with excited people dressed in German attire carrying their large beer mugs.

At the entrance, we paid $20 each for entry, and the lively sound of polka music instantly pulled us in. Long wooden benches, people in traditional Bavarian outfits, and the smell of grilled sausages and pretzels. The whole place had a genuine German village vibe.
Food, Drinks & Festivities
I spent $40 on food and drink tickets, and honestly, it was worth every dollar. I tried four different beers, each with its own distinct flavor, from light and crisp lagers to rich amber brews. My favorite was the one with a subtle caramel finish (wish I remembered the name, but by the fourth glass, names didn’t matter much).

For food, I ordered a chicken platter that came with sauerkraut and potatoes, followed by the classic soft pretzel; fresh, salty, and perfect with beer. The food lines were manageable, and the crowd had this friendly, festive energy that made waiting around actually fun.
The Oktoberfest Event
As the evening went on, the band turned up the energy, people were dancing, clinking glasses, and singing along to German tunes, even if they didn’t know the words. By 7 PM, the crowd had completely packed the festival grounds.

If you’re not much into dancing, you can just grab a table, enjoy your drink, and take it all in: the laughter, the conversations, and the sense of community. It’s one of those experiences where everyone feels like part of the same big celebration.
Things to Do Around Reading
If you’re planning a weekend trip, there’s more to explore around the area:
- Pagoda on Mount Penn: Just a short drive from the festival grounds, a must-visit for sunset views over Reading.
- Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center: Great spot for a quiet morning hike surrounded by fall colors.
- Downtown Reading: Check out local coffee shops, breweries, and art spaces if you’re staying overnight.
Reading Liederkranz Oktoberfest in Reading, PA, is a must-visit for anyone who loves cultural festivals, good food, and beer. It’s easy to reach, fun to experience, and offers a warm, welcoming atmosphere that perfectly captures the spirit of fall in Pennsylvania.

The fest this year was from Oct 1st to Oct 5th. Since the event is already over, I just wanted to pin down my experience, so that I can share this next year well in advance with my friends and peers.
