A Day at Colonel Denning State Park in Cumberland Valley, PA

Colonel Denning State Park

Some trips don’t need weeks of planning, but this one had actually been sitting in my browser tab for a while. Tucked away in the northern part of Cumberland County, Colonel Denning State Park is one of the lesser-known spots that doesn’t show up in every travel guide, but quietly holds its own. Surrounded by the rugged stretches of Tuscarora State Forest, the park is known for its peaceful setting, a small lake, and access to scenic trails like Flat Rock.

I had come across it a few weeks ago while hovering the google maps for new hiking spots near York, saved it, and kept putting it off, waiting for the “right time & weather” Last weekend, I finally decided to hit the roads, picked up my backpack, and just went.

Getting There: A Late Afternoon Start from York

I left York around 2 PM, not in a rush, just looking forward to getting out of the usual routine. The drive itself felt like a transition, gradually trading traffic for open roads and rolling landscapes.

By 3:15 PM, I was at the park. I parked near the visitor office, grabbed a trail map (definitely worth doing), and then drove over to the Flat Rock trailhead parking to start the hike.

The Hike to Flat Rock Overlook

The plan was simple: hike up, catch the views, and make it back before sunset. The Flat Rock Trail took me about 1.5 hours to reach the overlook, and it struck a nice balance, not too easy, but not exhausting either.

Here’s what stood out along the way:

  • A steady incline that keeps your heart rate up without feeling overwhelming
  • A few rocky stretches that make the hike a bit more engaging
  • Shelters along the way to sit back and relax, or maybe even camp too.

When I reached the top, it opened up exactly how you’d hope. Flat Rock Overlook gives you a wide, unobstructed view of the surrounding Cumberland Valley and Blueridge mountains.

Flat Rock Overlook isn’t a fenced viewpoint. It’s a broad stretch of exposed rock that naturally extends out over the valley, which makes the whole experience feel more real and less curated. As you walk toward the edge, the trees slowly fall away, and suddenly you’re looking out over layers of rolling ridges that seem to go on forever.

There’s enough space to walk around, find your own corner, or just sit on the rock and take it all in. I spent a few minutes just moving along the edge, seeing how the view shifts slightly from different angles.

A Slow Way Back: Wagon Wheel Shelter Stop

On the way down, I made a stop at the Wagon Wheel Shelter. This ended up being one of those small but memorable parts of the trip. Just a quiet place to sit, hydrate, and take in the surroundings before finishing the hike.

I made it back down around 6 PM, perfect timing before it started getting dark.

Day Use Area: Ending the Day Right

Before heading back, I made one last stop at the park’s day use area, and honestly, it felt like the perfect way to wind things down after the hike.

The space is built around a small, calm lake, with open grassy areas, picnic tables, and a laid-back atmosphere that’s very different from the trail. After spending a couple of hours in the woods and on rocky paths, this part of Colonel Denning State Park feels softer and more relaxed.

I took a slow walk along the edge of the water, just letting my legs recover a bit. The lake was still, reflecting the trees around it, and there were a few people scattered around, some fishing, a few families wrapping up their day, and others just sitting quietly.

You’ll find:

  • Picnic tables and shaded spots if you want to sit and eat
  • Open areas where you can just stretch out or relax after a hike
  • Easy access to the lake for a quick walk or just to sit by the water
  • Restroom facilities nearby, which is always useful after a trail

If you’re planning ahead, this is a great place to bring snacks or an early dinner and just hang out for a bit. I didn’t bring much this time, but it’s definitely something I’d do on my next visit.

Here’s the thing, this wasn’t a big, bucket-list kind of trip. But that’s exactly why it worked. No pressure to “cover everything,” no crowds, no rushing. Just a short drive, a good hike, and a few hours to reset.

If you are in Cumberland Valley, PA, this is another great hike to do – Pole Steeple Vista!
