Governor Dick Tower

Some weekends, I like to keep my adventures simple, no big itineraries, no long road trips, just a quick getaway to recharge. I keep a running list of bookmarked trails and parks for exactly those days. Last Saturday, I finally checked one off: Governor Dick Tower in Lebanon County, PA. What started as a low-key trip turned out into a peaceful hike, with a pinch of history, and refreshing views throughout the hike.

Getting There from York County, PA

From York, the drive was just about an hour, easy enough for a day trip, yet far enough that the landscape feels fresh and new. Rolling fields eventually gave way to wooded hills as I made my way to Clarence Schock Environmental Center, where I parked my car. The trailhead for the Tower Trail starts right there, so you can lace up and get going without any fuss.

PS: From Lancaster County, the spot is even closer. Only a 25 – 30 min drive.

About the Governor Dick Tower

Governor Dick is more than just a tower in the woods. It’s a 1,100-acre protected forest and recreation area that was donated to the public by Clarence Schock, a philanthropist and businessman, so that people could enjoy nature for generations. The name “Governor Dick” actually comes from a charcoal burner who once lived and worked in the area during Pennsylvania’s early iron industry days. His nickname stuck, and over time it became the official name of this forested park.

The land today is used for conservation, recreation, and environmental education, making it a special blend of history, nature, and community spirit.

The Hike to the Tower

The Tower Trail is a straightforward hike, about a mile long with some gradual uphill stretches. It’s not a difficult hiking trail, and is suitable for all age groups. The trail is shaded with plenty of trees, and gets a little rocky in some patches on the way up. It’s one of those hikes where you can actually relax and enjoy the walk instead of constantly checking how much farther you have to go.

When I finally reached the tower, I was greeted by the sight of a tall, stone structure rising out of the woods like something from a historic era.

Climbing the Tower

Here’s where the real fun begins. The tower climb is all stairs: narrow, winding, and a little bit of a workout, but absolutely worth it. Step by step, I could feel the adrenaline of climbing a 66-foot-high tower.

And then, at the top, the view opened up: 360-degree panoramas of central Pennsylvania’s forests, farmland, and rolling hills. The fall colors were just starting to show, which added an extra layer of beauty. The cold breeze on the face felt refreshing and made the whole trip worth it.

Significance of the Tower

In the 1950s, Governor Dick Observation Tower was constructed as a fire lookout, and it has since become the jewel of the forest. At 66 feet tall, it remains one of the best vantage points in the region. Beyond the views, the tower is a symbol of the park’s mission, encouraging people to connect with nature while preserving it.
