Gambrill State Park Maryland

As the days are getting shorter and the wind is starting to get Chilly, I am trying to make the best out of my weekends by going out in nature and exploring new hikes around York County, PA. Last Sunday, I took a short road trip down to Gambrill State Park in Maryland. The drive was about an hour and a half from my place. Smooth ride, light traffic, and plenty of fall colors along the way.

About Gambrill State Park

Located in the Catoctin Mountains ofFrederick County, Maryland, Gambrill State Park is a hidden gem for anyone looking to escape the hustle of city life. Established in the 1930s, the park offers panoramic views of Frederick Valley and is known for its scenic overlooks, quiet hiking trails, and peaceful picnic spots. Whether you’re a hiker, photographer, or just someone looking for a relaxing day in nature, Gambrill provides a perfect mix of accessibility and natural beauty.

First Stop: High Knob & Middletown Overlook

The best part about this park is that it has 03 different overlook points of Frederick County, each offering a different perspective of the city life. I started off at High Knob Point, which is one of the most popular spots in the park. There is ample parking space available in this area. The overlook view from here stretched endlessly over Frederick Valley. From there, I walked toward Middletown Overlook, one of the three overlook points in the park. The trail was quiet except for a few hikers and the sound of leaves crunching underfoot.

PS: There were a lot of bugs and flies around this area. So you better carry a bug repellent spray to enjoy the views.

Hiking to the Overlook Points

From Middletown Overlook, I continued hiking to the North Frederick and South Frederick Overlook points. The trails were moderate, with short climbs and some rocky patches, but nothing too tough. Each overlook offers a different perspective of the valley. North Frederick gives you a wide panoramic view, while South Frederick feels more tucked into the landscape. Both are perfect for photography or just enjoying nature for a while.

If you’re visiting in the fall like I did, the colors are unreal, shades of orange, red, and gold blanketing the mountains.

Things to Do Nearby

If you have more time, you can also visit:

  • Cunningham Falls State Park (about 20 minutes away) for waterfalls and more hiking.
  • Downtown Frederick – a charming area with local shops, art galleries, and historic architecture.
  • Sugarloaf Mountain – another scenic spot nearby for those who love hiking and photography.

Gambrill isn’t one of those overly crowded parks, and that’s what makes it special. It’s calm, well-maintained, and feels very connected to nature. Whether you’re hiking, picnicking, or just looking for a place to think, it gives you that perfect mix of quiet and beauty.

If you’re planning a day trip, pack some snacks and water because food options inside the park are limited. There are picnic areas with tables and restrooms near High Knob, which makes it easy to relax after a hike.
